There are several ways to install Ubuntu Linux (LiveCD) from a USB device. Making the Ubuntu LiveCD run from a USB is a breeze, with the isotostick script.
There is however, only one elegant and newbie friendly version to put an installable Ubuntu Alternate disk on the USB device (for easy server install, for example):
